How small can the world be?

Particularly the working environment?

I just realised that for this new job that I'm in, I was initially competing against two other people, which one I knew from a former job, worked with on the same project, and the other, I met during an interview who was (and still is I hear) an existing staff in the firm (which offer I didn't take up in the end).

This is how small the Cognos world is in Malaysia.

So always keep your professional reputation, cause you never know who will be signing your paychecks. Anyways it's never good to get on someone's bad side.

Urban Mini Getaway

Most people's idea of a holiday is to have travel, at least another state, better another country, another continent, and even further if technology and the travel industry condones it.

I therefore ask the question, how about a mini getaway right where you are ; a hotel in the city, rent a house with pals to chill for the weekend, etc. You've got little to no travel expenses, you the area well, you don't need to take too long a leave to do it, etc. Besides, admit it, there's stuff in your own country you've not seen which people travel half way around the world to see. (I was gonna say 3 quarter way around the world, but I just realised why they logically term it that way)

I did just that.

Place of choice was Hotel Maya, which I was totally oblivious to until a friend of mine told me he'd be planning a wedding there later this year. I wanted some thing different from the usual hotels.

Hotel Maya has a unique interior, shares half a building with Menara Chan (imagine converting an office block into an hotel), faces the Petronas Twin Towers, has a hydrotherapy pool, and cool sky lounge on the 13th floor. On a side, they also offer in-room DVD movies.

Stayed a night there, throw in a short trip to Suria KLCC, a dinner and complimentary breakfast the next morning and some privacy, you got yourself a cool mini weekend getaway.

I'd come back again :) ... for now ... enjoy the view;

... watching this to sleep ...

and waking up to this ...

Why Rev-Boy ?

I sometimes get people asking me, what's "Rev-Boy" or the meaning behind my nickname.

It feels like so long ago, but I think I can still recall. I better put it in a post before I forget due to my not-so-young age, and the fact that I am not getting younger physically.

1996 or 1997, the advent of the Internet to the teen community among the crowd I was with. mIRC was the biggest thing. Being able to communicate with people no matter how far away via chat was an amazing thing (of course mobile phones weren't common then too) So eventually I tried it. I needed a nickname.

I wanted something to reflect a good guy persona (even if it was made up haha). But I wouldn't dare go online using "goodboy" or "male-angel", that's cliché and corny. So I went with "reverend", sounded neat enough, even had some class to it. I think I even padded it with unique characters, and made it "|reverend|" or something. I think even now it's e-hip :)

Used it for a month or so, then someone created a bot (some permanent online ID) in my favourite chatroom using the same name, and I could not login anymore. I felt cheated. But what could I do ... nothing. So then I went a few years younger, and became "Rev-Boy", again doodling it, and getting "Rev-ßoy", which still looks ok to me. Used that for a very long time.

Many years later, when I got to working with a German firm, I then realised that the "ß" was nothing like a "B" and did not sounded like "bee" at all. The character "ß" is actually a "sharp s", which can be replaced with a "ss", and pronounced simply like a "s", common in the German language. So the German word for street, "straße", is not pronounced "strabe", but "strasse". So, my nickname is not pronounced "rev" "ssoy", that sounds like a bootlegged soy milk product.

So now, I am better sticking to Rev-Boy, just Rev-Boy. This way I don't even need to use the "Alt" button on my keyboard and the keypad (numbers 2 and 3) to generated the "ß" character ... and I don't sound like a drink.

Apparently, there's another revboy out there, but that is not me (I realised this back in 1998 or so). If I ever meet the guy, I'm sure we'd get along well. I think he's from the USA. What do you think ?

Movies Galore!!

It has been quite a while since Carol and I watched a movie, or multiple movies over a few days, which we used to do quite a fair bit during our dating days. Also I got hold of some passes so I should need to use 'em too.

So we've got these planned out or watched already by now :

Alien Vs. Predator : Requiem

I know some of you might not agree that the films above are worth watching, in fact I don't expect much from some of them too, which may be the reason I actually enjoy it :)

Best Practices to Getting Married

Getting married, that's something you'd expect to do only once in a lifetime, thus you'd wanna make it memorable and romantic, and perfect ... and all the nice words you can dig out of your vocabulary.

But sometimes that perspective and expectation you and others preset, though unintentionally can be one of the main causes of tension and pressure leading to the big day, which ideally anyone would like to avoid.

Having just been through our own wedding, here's some tips we'd like to share, hoping it helps anyone out there with their big day (note : sometimes the best advise comes from those who have gone through a wedding and wish they've done it differently):

Chill ; a wedding is still just another event to organize and make happen, and keeping that in mind makes things happen better than expecting and trying to do everything perfect ; embraces flaws and work around them instead of mulling over them till even after the wedding.
Play ; a wedding is not a test you need to prepare and sit for and meet a passing mark, but it's the union of you and your loved one, so be like lovers, have fun, laugh, go out on dates, make time for each other (not meet up to discuss wedding stuff), go to the movies, dine out, etc.
Release ; don't try to do everything yourself ... let go and have people you trust handle stuff for you ; good friends will be so happy for you and find it an honor to do their part ... you on the other hand need to give them a free hand and not puppet-control them (remember point 1 and 2).

After all, it's not like it's all over after the marriage ... it's really the first step.

Ok, ok. Here we go! I've never maintained a successful or long running blog before ... albeit one attempt, but with such changes taking place in my life ... I guess the time is right.
